What has been happening in year 1 and year 2?
Year 1
What a fantastic and busy end to the term we have had in Year 1! The last two weeks have been full of exciting learning opportunities, special events, and plenty of sunshine as we welcome the beginning of spring.
We thoroughly enjoyed celebrating World Book Week, where the children took part in a range of fun workshops and activities that helped to inspire a love of reading and storytelling. It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm for books grow even more. Alongside this, we also marked Neurodiversity Week, learning about how everyone’s brains work in different ways and celebrating what makes each of us unique. The children showed kindness, curiosity, and respect throughout these important discussions.
Thank you to all the parents and carers who attended Parents’ Evening. It was lovely to share the children’s progress and achievements with you. We are very proud of how hard they have been working.
In English, the children have been developing their writing skills by creating instructional texts. They have learned how to use bossy verbs, include clear steps, and write helpful instructions. More recently, we have begun writing explanation texts, which the children are very excited to share with Reception. We have also been focusing on using question marks correctly and including interesting facts in our writing.
In maths, we have been exploring measurement, with a focus on mass. The children have enjoyed using rulers to measure in centimetres and have also been using scales and cubes to compare and measure the mass of different objects. They have shown great curiosity and problem-solving skills during these hands-on activities.
Our history lessons have taken us back to the 1950s. The children have been fascinated to learn about how life was both similar and different compared to today. We discussed items such as fridges and hoovers, which are still used now, as well as how televisions and phones have changed over time.
In DT the children have been busy creating wheel mechanisms. They have worked hard to design and build their own moving models and will soon choose their favourite mechanism to create a final piece, which they will evaluate thoughtfully.
In RE, we have been learning about Islam and the significance of Ramadan. The children were particularly interested in learning about fasting and why it is important to Muslims. We would like to wish a very happy Eid to all those who are celebrating.
It has been a joyful and productive end to the term, made even better by the beautiful sunny weather. Thank you for your continued support, and we hope you all have a restful break.

Year 2
It has been a very busy and exciting few weeks in Year 2! The children had a fantastic trip visiting the Kew Archives, where they immersed themselves in artefacts from the time of the Great Fire of London. This experience really brought their learning to life and helped them to better understand what life was like during this important historical event.
In English, the children have been working incredibly hard. They created their own news reports about the fire and thoroughly enjoyed acting them out, taking on the role of real-life news reporters. They also wrote diary entries inspired by Samuel Pepys, describing how they might have felt during the fire.
In maths, we have begun our new topic on mass, capacity, and temperature. The children have been introduced to grams and kilograms and have started to explore how we measure and compare different weights. In RE, we are continuing our learning about Buddhism. The children have been exploring sacred texts and enjoyed learning about the tale of the Talkative Tortoise, thinking carefully about the message behind the story.
In DT, we have been busy practising our sewing skills. The children have started designing and planning their own finger puppets and are looking forward to sewing them next week. If you are available to help with this activity, please do let the class teacher know – your support would be greatly appreciated.
In science, we continue our topic on plants. The children have really enjoyed sowing sunflower seeds and have been carefully watering them each day, excitedly watching them grow. They will be bringing their plants home during the Easter holidays so they can continue to care for them.
