Read on to find out what has been happening in Years 3 & 4.
Year 3
It was wonderful to welcome Year 3 back on Monday and hear all about their fantastic half-term breaks. We are so excited for the term ahead and everything it has to bring, including our very first Year 3 trip!
We have already immersed ourselves in our new book, The First Drawing, which links beautifully with our new history topic. We have been exploring how to find the extraordinary in the ordinary, just like the characters in our story. The children will soon be writing diary entries about their incredible encounter with a woolly mammoth, and we cannot wait to share their wonderful writing with you!
In maths, we have been enjoying our new topic of measurement. The children have been using rulers, measuring tapes and metre sticks to measure objects and develop their understanding of millimetres, centimetres and metres.
In our wider curriculum, we began our history learning by exploring prehistoric times and ordering events on a timeline. We have also enjoyed our final string lesson this week ahead of our performance next week. We cannot wait to share everything we have learnt with you! As teachers, we feel incredibly proud of how engaged and focused the children have been while learning a new instrument.
PE has been great fun too, as we begin our new gymnastics topic. This term, we will be learning a series of balances and movements, working towards creating a final routine.
What a fantastic start to the term! We are looking forward to all the exciting learning and wonderful experiences still to come.

Year 4
Welcome back to a brand new half term! The children have returned with great enthusiasm and it has been wonderful to see them so engaged in our new topics across the curriculum.
In English, we’ve started reading our new class text Escape from Pompeii by Christina Balit. The children have already been captivated by the vivid illustrations and dramatic storyline. Next week, we’ll be using this text as inspiration to write our own setting descriptions of Pompeii before the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, followed by an exciting narrative based on the story. This links perfectly with our new history topic - Roman Britain. We’ve begun by exploring what the Roman Empire was and will soon be sequencing the Romans’ attempts (and eventual success) at invading Britain.
In maths, we’re broadening our skills by practising estimating, rounding, and exploring the most efficient methods for addition and subtraction. The children are working hard to explain their reasoning and show confidence in choosing the best strategies for different problems.
In science, we’ve had a popular and thought-provoking lesson discussing the impact of human behaviour on the natural world. The children were excellent at thinking of ways that these problems could be solved. We continue this theme next week when we will be researching endangered animals to learn about species at risk and how humans can help.
In DT, we’ve begun our new food unit! We’ll be learning about seasonal ingredients and healthy eating, culminating in the children designing and making their very own pasta salads.
Finally, in RE, we’re exploring Buddhism and Sikhism, focusing on how these faiths guide people in how to live and behave, through stories, beliefs, and places of worship.
It’s shaping up to be a busy and exciting half term ahead!
