Reception News

Read on to find out what has been happening in reception.
Over the past two weeks in Reception, we have been very busy with our learning! In our PSHE and topic sessions, we have been exploring what it means to be healthy and how to take care of both our bodies and our minds. We talked about the importance of getting lots of sleep, making healthy food choices, and how brushing our teeth helps keep us strong and well. We also discussed people who help us stay healthy, such as doctors, nurses, dentists and our families. As part of our “people who help us” learning, we also learned about Mary Fields, the first Black woman to work as a post person in America. We explored how she helped people and thought about why she is special and important, as well as how her life was different in the past.
In phonics, we have continued practising our Set 2 special friends, including ay, ee, igh, ow, oo (zoo), oo (book), ar, or, ir, air, ou and oy. The children have been working really hard to spot these sounds in words and are now beginning to read words using “Fred in our Head,” sounding out in their minds to build fluency. In maths, we have moved on to learning about doubles. We have been noticing when the parts are the same and understanding that this means it is a double. The children have enjoyed exploring doubles in a variety of ways and have been practising saying their doubles up to 10 with growing confidence. We are so proud of all their hard work and enthusiasm!
Talk homework
At home, with your child, we would like to encourage you to have a conversation about the learning we are doing in school. In every newsletter, we will share with you an idea to spark a conversation with your child.
This week, ask your child -
Who is Mary Fields and why was she special?
Can you tell me how we keep our bodies healthy?
Why is it important to get lots of sleep?
What healthy foods do you like to eat?
What is a double?
Can you find something at home that shows a double (e.g. 2 and 2)?
What is double 3? Double 5?

Every Friday, we celebrate any star moments your child has had at home e.g. learnt to ride a bike, helped their siblings at home, started a new club, used wonderful manners to a relative etc. The spare ‘Star Moments’ sheets can be found hanging on the door if you run out.

Please continue to bring in reading folders every Wednesday and these will be returned with new books on Thursdays. Please listen to your child read at least 5 times a week and record their progress in the reading record.

We would love to invite any family members who have occupations such as doctors, dentists, nurses, firefighters, police officers, or other similar roles (linked to our topic - ‘people who help us’) to come in and talk to the children about their work. This could be through a short talk, answering questions, or sharing equipment or uniforms (where appropriate). If you would be interested in taking part or would like more information, please do get in touch with your child's teacher. We would be delighted to arrange this and greatly appreciate your support.
