Reception News

Read on to find out what has been happening in reception.
We have had a fantastic and sunny two weeks in Reception, packed with exciting learning and memorable experiences!
One of the highlights was our wonderful Dinosaur Workshop. The children had the opportunity to become palaeontologists for the day, investigating fossils and learning all about dinosaurs. They impressed everyone with their incredible dinosaur knowledge, confidently discussing herbivores, carnivores and omnivores. We also explored just how enormous some dinosaurs were and learned about different theories explaining how they became extinct. The children were enthusiastic, curious and fully engaged throughout the workshop.
In maths, we have been consolidating our learning by recapping doubles, odd and even numbers, and sharing equally. The children have also been practising their number bonds and developing their understanding of number relationships. We were particularly proud to see them having a go at writing and solving their own number sentences, demonstrating growing confidence and independence in their mathematical thinking.
In English, we enjoyed reading the imaginative story ‘If the Dinosaurs Came Back…’ This inspired some wonderful creative writing. Using the story as a stem sentence, the children wrote their own original fiction sentences about what they would like dinosaurs to do if they returned today. We loved reading their imaginative ideas, which included dinosaurs helping with jobs, playing games and even becoming helpful members of the community!
Well done, Reception, for another fantastic fortnight of learning!
Talk homework
At home, with your child, we would like to encourage you to have a conversation about the learning we are doing in school. In every newsletter, we will share with you an idea to spark a conversation with your child.
This week, ask your child -
-
🦖 What is a palaeontologist and what do they do?
-
🦕 Can you tell me the difference between a herbivore, carnivore and omnivore? Can you name a dinosaur from each group?
-
🌍 Why do scientists think dinosaurs became extinct?
-
📏 Which dinosaur was the biggest one you learned about? How big was it?
-
📚 If dinosaurs came back today, what would you like them to do? Why?
-
💭 Can you think of another funny or helpful job a dinosaur could do in our community?
