Reception News

Read on to find out what has been happening in reception.

What an exciting year we have had in Reception! It has been a joy to watch the children grow, embrace new learning and develop in so many ways. We are incredibly proud of everything they have achieved.

The year began with lots of new routines to learn, and the children quickly settled into school life, making new friends and growing in confidence.

During the autumn term, we learnt all about ourselves and celebrated a range of festivals, including Diwali. We finished the term with a fantastic trip to the theatre to see Father Christmas. In the Spring term, we explored where we live before comparing our local area with Trinidad and Tobago. The steel pan workshop was a real musical highlight! We then learnt about superheroes, both fictional characters and real-life heroes.

This summer, our topics have included minibeasts and dinosaurs. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to the farm, as well as Vineyard Adventurers.

In phonics, we have learnt all of our sounds and 'Special Friends' and have continued to work hard at recognising them in our reading and using them in our writing. We have written a letter to King Charles, created a class non-fiction book about dinosaurs and invented our own superheroes.

In maths, we have explored the composition of numbers to 10 and can now use doubles and number bonds to help solve problems. We have also learnt about 2D and 3D shapes, measuring and capacity.

We would like to wish all of our families a wonderful summer holiday and thank you for your continued support throughout the year. It has been a pleasure to teach your children, and we wish them every success as they move on to Year 1.

Talk homework

At home, with your child, we would like to encourage you to have a conversation about the learning we are doing in school. In every newsletter, we will share with you an idea to spark a conversation with your child.

This week, ask your child -

  • How do we know that dinosaurs were real?

  • What is a fossil?

  • Who is Mary Anning and what job did she do?

  • When you visited Year 1  was anything the same as Reception? Was anything different?

  • Name your three favourite memories from this year.
