Reception News

Read on to find out what has been happening in reception.

What a wonderful few weeks we have had in Reception, full of fun, new experiences and lots of learning opportunities!

The children have worked really hard on their phonics, focusing on the sounds t, i, p, n, g, o, c and k. They have been practising saying, recognising and writing each sound. We have continued to practise writing our names and have been listening carefully to identify the initial sounds in CVC words. We have been very excited to begin our ‘Helicopter Stories’, where the children become storytellers! They create their own stories and act them out with their classmates, while everyone else joins in as the audience, playing an equally important role.

In maths, we have been learning about the composition of the numbers 1, 2, and 3. We’ve been making and counting groups and using lots of practical resources to help us understand how those numbers are made up.

During our topic lessons, we have been exploring our five senses and learning how we use them. The children have also enjoyed using the large construction equipment outdoors to build our school, helping them develop their understanding of the local area. In the construction area we challenged them to use loose parts to make a marble run for a conker and they showed great problem-solving and creativity.

Next week, we will revisit this term’s sounds and explore the changes we see in Autumn.

Talk homework

At home, with your child, we would like to encourage you to have a conversation about the learning we are doing in school. In every newsletter, we will share with you ideas to spark a conversation with your child.

This week, ask your child -

  • Can you name your five senses?

  • How does the rhyme end? Down the tower, across……

  • What town is our school in?

  • Which book have you enjoyed during storytime?
