Reception News

Read on to find out what has been happening in Reception.

We hope you all had a wonderful half-term break!

The children have been so excited to share their autumn treasure bags and have used some wonderful descriptive words to talk about their autumnal discoveries. We have used these natural objects as inspiration for our writing, with the children having a go at writing sentences beginning with ‘I can see…’, using the sounds they know.

In phonics, we have been learning the sounds u, b, f, e and l and using Fred Talk to segment and blend sounds to help us read words. We have also been learning red words (sight words). So far, we have learnt to recognise ‘I’ and ‘the’. When reading with your child at home, you could ask them to look out for these red words in the text and see if they can recognise them.

In our topic work, we have been making observations about the changing seasons. The children have thoroughly enjoyed learning about Diwali, creating wonderful firework pictures using chalk, developing their fine motor skills by making intricate rangoli patterns and designing their own Diwali cards. They have also loved using puppets to retell the story of Rama and Sita.

Next week, we will be focusing on kindness and learning about Remembrance Day. We look forward to another exciting week of learning together!

Talk homework

At home, with your child, we would like to encourage you to have a conversation about the learning we are doing in school. In every newsletter, we will share with you ideas to spark a conversation with your child.

This week, ask your child -

  • What is Diwali?

  • How is Diwali celebrated?

  • How does the rhyme end? "Round her face, down her hair and…

  • What does subitise mean?
