Read on to find out what has been happening in years 5 & 6
Year 5
As we head into the final term of Year 5, our calendar is bursting with trips, events and exciting opportunities for learning. The children have returned with great enthusiasm and there is a real sense of anticipation for everything still to come before the summer holidays.
In English, we have stepped into the world of heroes and monsters through Michael Morpurgo's retelling of Beowulf. The children have thoroughly enjoyed the story and have been using their understanding of the fearsome Grendel to create detailed wanted posters. It has been wonderful to see them thinking carefully about language choices and how best to persuade others to help track down this notorious character.
Mathematics has taken us beyond the classroom as we explored measurement in practical ways around the school. Armed with tape measures and plenty of determination, the children measured everything from desks and climbing frames to the basketball court, applying their learning to real-life situations and developing their problem-solving skills along the way.
There was also a chance to challenge our taste buds during D&T. Thanks to the fantastic selection of fruit and vegetables brought in by the children, everyone had the opportunity to sample something different. Many showed impressive bravery when trying unfamiliar foods and there were plenty of surprised reactions as new favourites were discovered.
Our new history topic on the Vikings has already captured the imagination of the class. Their curiosity and eagerness to learn more make us even more excited for our upcoming visit to Fulham Palace.
The standout moment of the last two weeks was undoubtedly our Geography fieldwork day. Through a range of investigations and activities, the children explored the question, “What does Richmond tell us about the people who live there?” and impressed us with their thoughtful observations and discussions.

Year 6
What a week we have had! The much awaited Year 6 trip to PGL Liddington was an unforgettable experience, full of adventure, laughter and even some sunshine. From the moment we boarded the coach, the excitement was non-stop and every day brought a new challenge and opportunity to try something new.
Our week was packed with thrilling activities and the sun (mostly!) stayed with us throughout, making everything even more enjoyable. We tested our nerves and conquered fears with abseiling and the exhilarating zip wire - flying through the air with huge smiles! The giant swing was a firm favourite, while archery gave us the chance to try something completely new.
There were plenty more adventures too – survivor, climbing, problem solving, trapeze and evening games that kept everyone smiling and engaged from morning to night. It really was a busy week!
It was brilliant to see everyone truly showing The Vineyard Values of being caring and courageous throughout the week, supporting one another, trying new things and growing in confidence each day.
Our accommodation was comfortable and cosy and everyone loved spending time in their rooms with friends, winding down after a busy day. And let’s not forget the food – we were truly spoilt! Every meal was tasty and very filling.
PGL wasn’t just about activities – it was about working as a team, building resilience and independence and making memories that will stay with us forever. We returned home tired but buzzing with stories to share and achievements to celebrate. Memories that will definitely last us a lifetime.
We are incredibly proud of our Year 6s – they were brave, kind and full of enthusiasm all week.
The fun doesn’t end there though: we are looking forward to getting back to our enterprise projects, rehearsals, D&T day and focusing on transition to secondary school. This really is a term to remember!
Here are some quotes from very happy children:
‘Go to the top of everything - you don’t want to regret it.’
‘I really didn’t think I could have done the abseiling before today.’
‘This is the BEST day ever!’
‘It’s been a great experience to grow independence and climb lots of different things.
