    Important information about library books

The library is at the heart of the school and so that it can continue to succeed, it is important that we have all the books in the library ready for next year. The last chance for children to borrow books from the library this academic year is on Tuesday the 9th of July. Also, if you have any Vineyard School library books, please could they be returned as soon as possible and by the 19th July at the latest. Thanks!

    On to our recommended read

This is a special book. A book which I cannot recommend highly enough. It is a graphic novel, which tells the true story of two brothers living in a refugee camp. This book is a mature, language-rich next step for any KS2 child who enjoys comics or picture based books.

    Mr Jones recommends:

When Stars are Scattered by Victoria Jamieson

    Reading Age: 7-11

Genre: graphic novel, current affair & biography

This week, I have been chatting to pupils in every year about what they like reading and not to my surprise, they said they like books with pictures! Pictures serve as a way to link the words to an image and support understanding.

“The best thing about poetry is that it needs to be read aloud. And once that has happened, it needs to be read again” Michael Rosen wrote this and often students favourite thing about poetry is the performance aspect. It helps build sounds, rhythm intonation and fluency.

    Young and Lily recommend:

Things That Should Be in a Poem by Coral Rumble

Reading Age: Reception - year 3

    Genre: poetry, illustration & nature

If you are looking for a KS2 poetry book, the top three I would recommend is:

    1. The Final Year by Matt Goodfellow

    2. Cloudbusting by Malorie Blackman

    3. Overheard in a Tower Block by Benjamin Zephaniah
