Come and find out what Reception have been up to this week!

Reception

This week in Reception, we have been learning about sources of light and the children have enjoyed completing a ‘sources of light’ hunt, ticking all the sources of light they can find both indoors and outdoors. Bursting with enthusiasm, the children have learnt to use finger spaces and a full stop to create their own short sentence. The children were encouraged to write sentences linked to their age- ‘I am 4.’  During free learning, they have been learning to recognise their red words with a fun activity of rolling the cars down a ramp and saying which red word the car has landed on! In maths, we have continued to reinforce our understanding of numbers 1 to 5, identifying 1 more or 1 less than a given number and learning about the composition of each number.  For example, 5 can be made up of 2 and 3 or 1 and 4. In the creation station, the children have been exploring their feelings through colour. The children were encouraged to name and describe their favourite place and then paint a picture. In phonics, we have been learning the sounds ‘x’ and ‘z’ and this now completes all our initial sounds. Thank you for continuing to practise the sounds at home- it really makes a difference! With much excitement, we have continued our nativity rehearsals and the children have attempted to say their lines independently. Please help your child at home to learn and remember their lines.

Key messages

  • FAMILY STORY TIME: We will be having a family story time on Wednesday 20th December at 2.50pm in your child’s classroom. Please come if you can, sit down with your child and enjoy a story that the class teacher will read to them.

  • Please practise writing and saying the sounds at home, using the sheets and phonics website to help you; the sheets do not need to be returned.

  • We would also appreciate any donations of compost to make our ‘mud kitchen’ even more fun for the children!

  • To review the phonics sounds that your child has been learning, please visit the phonics website: https://sites.google.com/thevineyardschool.org/phonicsthevineyard/reception

  • Reading books: please note we don’t expect children to be able to read the story books that they have chosen to bring home. They are for you to read to them. The decodable books are the small rectangular books.

  • Please remember to check your child’s bag every day in case they have brought home anything from school, or in case they have a first aid slip.

  • We’ve begun our Nativity rehearsals. Please label all costumes and bags and remember to bring these to school by Wednesday 29th November. I hope all children are enjoying learning their lines at home.

  • The Nativity performances are at 9.30am: 5th December (Topaz), 6th December (Opal), 7th December (Jade).
