Reading and Phonics

Reading at The Vineyard enables our children to become informed, inspired and curious.

A Vineyard reader:

  • Enjoys reading, and shows a willingness and desire to be engaged in a book daily

  • Uses their knowledge of phonics and words to decode new and unfamiliar words

  • Appreciates a range of text types including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, picture books and chapter books

  • Has the ability to confidently and fluently read out loud, utilising intonation and rhythm

  • Identifies books that they have enjoyed and can explain why they enjoyed that book

  • Is able to give recommendations based on books they have read

  • Can make links between other books they have read and other areas of the curriculum

Phonics at The Vineyard

As a school, we follow the Read Write Inc. phonics programme, which teaches children to decode words accurately and fluently. They learn to form each letter, blend sounds to read words and segment sounds to spell correctly. We have adapted the RWI phonics programme to suit the needs of our school.

Children learn the English alphabetic code: first they learn one way to read the 40+ sounds and blend these sounds into words, then as they move into Year 1 and 2, they learn to read the same sounds with alternative graphemes. Reading books are closely matched to their increasing knowledge of phonics and, as children re-read the stories, their fluency and stamina for reading improves. Below are Set 1, 2 and 3 sounds, and a video showing how to pronounce them.
