We are going to continue our culture recommendations with a book close to home! The Big Book Series is a popular scheme of non-fiction books which look to build children’s vocabulary and factual knowledge.

The Big Book of the UK by Imogen Russell Williams

    Reading Age: year 3 - year 6

Genre: non-fiction (history, geography and nature)

If your child enjoys the Big Book Series then you can find books about a range of topics including: birds, marine wildlife, beasts, arts and plants. Finding a balance between non-fiction and fiction can be difficult but in an ideal world we would aim for 50/50.

It is the summer term and the sun is shining brightly on our school (for now)! For the next 6 weeks we will be recommending a book from a different culture. Let us start with:

The Katha Chest by Radhiah Chowdhury

Reading Age: reception - year 3

    Genre: family, culture & historical-fiction

In my opinion this book is a hidden gem. It is beautifully woven tale about the bonds of love, culture, and memory follows a young girl learning about her family history through her grandmother’s katha chest.
